Part 2 of the Seiko watches movements how to:

HOW TO SET TIME AND DATE
• Unscrew (if screwdown type) the crown by turning it counterclockwise
and pull out to the first click position.
• Turn the crown clockwise until the previous day’s date appears.
• Pull the crown out to the second click.
• Turn the crown to advance the hands until the date changes to
the next day. The time is set for the A.M. period. Keep
advancing the hands to set the correct time.
• Push the crown back into the original position.
• Screw in crown (if screwdown type).

HOW TO USE THE 24-HOUR HAND (5M65)
Because this watch is designed with an hour hand that can move
separately from the other hands, setting procedures are a bit
different.
You can set the watch in two different modes:
• The 24-hour hand shows 24-hour time and acts as an AM/PM
indicator while the hour hand shows 12-hour time

OR
• The 24-hour hand shows the time in a different time zone from
the time shown by the hour hand.
1. Pull the crown out to the second click position when the
second hand is at the 12 o’clock position.
2a. For a single time zone, so the 24-hour hand indicates
AM/PM, turn the crown in either direction to set the minute
hand and 24-hour hand to the current time in your area,
using the 24-hour marks on the dial.
OR
2b.To use the 24-hour hand to indicate time in another zone,
turn the crown in either direction to set the minute hand and
the 24-hour hand to the time in another area, using the 24-
hour marks on the dial.
3. Push the crown back to normal position.
4. Now pull the crown out to the first click position and rotate it
in either direction, moving the hour hand around the dial (it
moves in one hour increments) until both the date and hour
are correct for your area.
5. Push the crown back to normal position.

 CHECKING THE POWER RESERVE
The power reserve indicator function shows how much energy is
stored. To check how long the watch can operate on its current
charge, wait until the second hand is in the 12 o’clock position and
press the button at the 2 o’clock position on the watch case. Then
use the chart below to determine how much stored energy is
indicated by the number of seconds that the second hand moved.
The second hand will resume normal operation in 30 seconds or less.

SUN009 SUN010 SKA367 SKA371 SKA413

FEATURES
- Automatic power generator.
- Power reserve indicator function.
- Energy depletion forewarning function.
- Overcharge prevention function.
- 6-month power reserve
- Hour, minute and second hands.
- 24 hour hand (5M65 only)
- Capable of indicating Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
or used as dual time indicator.

HOW TO CHARGE THE WATCH
When using the watch for the first time after it is purchased, be sure
to charge the power reserve sufficiently by swinging the watch side
to side before setting the time and other functions.
1. Swing the watch from side to side approximately 250 times at
the rate of twice per second. This will start the watch and the
second hand will move at one-second intervals. Swinging the
watch 200 times further will reserve approximately one
additional day of power.
2. Set the time/calendar and put on the watch.

Note:
Wearing the watch continuously for 12 hours will accumulate power
to run the watch for approximately one and a half additional days.
As a general guideline, if you wear the watch every day for 12
hours over a period of a week, the power to run the watch for
approximately ten days will be additionally secured. If the watch
enters the power save mode, this amount of energy will keep the
watch from running for approximately one month and a half.

To be continued...

Many Seiko watches or Citizen watches as well as other brand feature a tachymeter on the bezel. You may be wearing one now but have no clue how to use it.

A tachymeter is the name of the scale sometimes inscribed around the rim of an analog watch. It can be used to compute speed based on travel time or measure distance based on speed. The function performed by a tachymeter is independent of the unit of distance (e.g. statute miles, nautical miles, kilometres, metres etc.) as long as the same unit of length is used for all calculations. It can also be used to measure an industrial production process in units per hour. A tachymeter is simply a means of converting elapsed time in seconds per X to X per hour.

Measuring speed

To use a tachymeter-equipped watch for measuring speed, start the chronograph at a starting marker of a known distance. At the next marker, the point on the scale adjacent to the second hand indicates the speed (in distance between markers per hour) of travel between the two.

A standard tachymeter will only determine speeds greater than 60 units per hour using this method; slower speeds can be measured by decreasing the unit of measurement. Rarely, a tachymeter function is implemented in a fully digital watch, with digital display.

Measuring distance

A tachymeter-equipped watch can be used to measure distance by timing the travel over the distance while the speed is held constant. The tachymeter scale is rotated to align with the second hand at the start of the length to be measured. When the second hand reaches the point on the scale where the speed indicated equals the speed of the vehicle, one unit of distance (miles if speed is miles per hour, kilometres if kilometres per hour, etc.) has been covered.

Here is part 2 on using the perpetual calender movement found on Seiko watches.

PROCEDURES TO CHECK AND ADJUST CALENDAR

STEP 1
Pull out to first click.

STEP 2
ZERO-MATCHING THE SECOND POSITION
Press and hold button for 2 seconds, the
second hand moves to the initially set zero
position which should be exactly at 12 o’clock.
If not, adjust it by turning the crown.
The calendar disk also moves to the initially set
zero position within this step. Date window will
display the number 1. If not, adjustment can be
made by following instructions in step 3.

STEP 3
ZERO-MATCHING THE CALENDAR DISK
Press the button. The calendar disk swings
back and forth for one time to show that you
are now adjusting the zero position of the
calendar disk. The calendar disk should show
the initially set zero position which is “1”.
If not, adjust it by turning the crown.

STEP 4
ADJUSTING THE DATE
Press the button. The second hand moves to
9 o’clock position to show that you are now
adjusting the date. The calendar disk moves
to the initially set current date. Adjust it, if
necessary, by turning the crown.

STEP 5
ADJUSTING THE MONTH
Press the button. The second hand moves
to 10 o’clock position to show that you are
now adjusting the month. The calendar disk
moves to the initially set current month.
Adjust it, if necessary, by turning the crown.

STEP 6
ADJUSTING THE YEAR
Press the button. The second hand moves
to 11 o’clock position to show that you are now
adjusting the year. The calendar disk moves to
the initially set current year. Adjust it, if necessary,
by turning the crown (the calendar displays the
last 2 digits of the Christian Era until 2031).

STEP 7
COMPLETING THE ADJUSTMENT
The calendar adjustment is completed by
pushing the crown back to the normal position.
Hour, minute and second hands will advance
to correct time.

BATTERY LIFE INDICATOR
When the second hand starts moving at two-second intervals
instead of the normal one-second interval, replace the battery with
a new one as soon as possible. Otherwise, the watch will stop
operating in a couple of days.
• The time accuracy is not affected even if the second hand is
moving at two-second intervals.
• While the second hand is moving at two-second intervals, the
date will not change. This is not a malfunction.

CHECKING AND ADJUSTMENT OF THE
CALENDAR AFTER BATTERY CHANGE
After the battery is replaced with a new one, be sure to check that
the calendar is correct. If the watch does not indicate the year,
month and date correctly, adjust the calendar. (See “HOW TO
CHECK AND ADJUST THE CALENDAR.”)

Good luck with your new watch, I hope you got it at USWatches.com

The perpetual calender line of Seiko watches is pretty to look at, yet extremely functional. Models SNQ075, SNQ076, SNQ085, SNQ095, SNQ007 ,
SNQ010, SNQ045, SNQ067, SNQ068, and SNQ070 all use this movement.

FEATURES
- Hour, Minute, Second Hand
- Date Calendar
- Once set, the calendar automatically
adjusts for odd and even months including
February of leap years up to February 28, 2031.
After 2032, adjust the year manually following
the procedures in “HOW TO CHECK AND
ADJUST THE CALENDAR.”
- It indicates the year, month and date.

Before using the watch:
- Because the calendar is pre-adjusted at the factory,
you only need to set the time and date.

TIME/DATE SETTING
1. Pull the crown out to second click when the second hand is at the
12 o’clock position.
2. Turn the crown in either direction to set the time and date.
3. Push the crown back completely when set to desired time.
HOW TO CHECK AND ADJUST THE CALENDAR
Follow the procedures below to check the calendar, and if
necessary, to adjust it.
• Do not check and adjust the calendar between 11:00 p.m. and 1:00
a.m. If the calendar is checked and adjusted between 11:00 p.m.
and 1:00 a.m., the date may not change properly. In such case, first
change the time to any time outside this period, and then set the
date. After that, move the hands back to the correct time.

- If the crown is pulled out to the second click while the
numeral in the calendar frame is advancing or moving back,
the second hand may be misaligned from the 12 o’clock
position (initial position).
- The button and crown operation cannot be made while the
numeral in the calendar frame is advancing or moving back.
Press the button or turn the crown after the numeral stops.
- If the watch is left untouched for more than 2 or 3 minutes
while checking or adjusting the calendar, the watch will resume
normal movement. In such a case, start again from the
beginning of the procedures in “HOW TO CHECK AND
ADJUST THE CALENDAR.”
- Do not leave the crown at the first or second click when you use
the watch, as this will shorten the battery life.

The Seiko SLQ021 Kinetic chronograph is one of the flagship Seiko watches. A technological work of art and a limited edition. It is available now at www.USWatches.com. If you are lucky enough to own one, or curious about how it works read on..

TIPS ON READING THE HANDS
The minute hand turns a full circle in 30 minutes. The indicated
scale, therefore, should be read differently depending on the
position of the hour hand.
Ex.)The minute hand indicates “10”:
Measured time is either “10 minutes” or “40 minutes”. Check
the position of the hour to decide which to choose.
“1 hour and 10 minutes” – (The hour hand is nearer to the 1-
hour marker)
“1 hour and 40 minutes” – (The hour hand is nearer to the 2-
hour marker)
Ex.)“1 hour 55 minutes 50 seconds and 9/10th”:
Second hand reading – (The second hand almost points to
“51” but should be read as “50” as the 1/10 second hand
indicates “9”)
Minute hand reading – (The minute hand almost points to
“26” but should be read as “55” as the measured seconds are
“50” and the hour hand is nearer to the 2-hour marker. Refer
to the first example in this section)

HOW TO USE THE CHRONOGRAPH
Before using the chronograph be sure to reset the hands to
the “0” position.
• Check that the watch is operating normally. If the watch has
stopped completely or if the second hand is moving at twosecond
intervals, charge the watch sufficiently (see “HOW TO
CHARGE AND START THE WATCH”).
• If the hands are moving, press the start/stop button once, then
press the reset button once to reset the hands to the “0”
position. If the hands have stopped moving, press the reset
button once to return the hands to “0” position. If the hands do
not return, press the start/stop button again followed by the
reset button.
1. Standard Measurement
• Press button B to start.
• Press button B to stop.
• Press button A to reset.
2. Accumulated Elapsed Time Measurement
• Press button B to start.
• Press button B to stop.
• Press button B to restart.
• Press button B to stop.
• Press button A to reset.
Restart and stop of the chronograph can be repeated by pressing
button B.

Notes:
• You may feel that the buttons of the watch are harder to press
compared to those of conventional watches. This is due to the
special construction the watch uses for the chronograph
function, and is not a malfunction.
• While the chronograph is being used, the watch consumes 10
times the amount of energy required by time indication alone.
Before using the chronograph, therefore, make sure that the
watch is charged sufficiently.
• When using the chronograph for the first time after the watch
has been charged to start operation, be sure to reset the
chronograph even if the hands are at “0” position.

4. Turn crown clockwise until the present date appears.
5. Set the hour and minute hands to present time. Be sure AM and PM are set accordingly.
6. Push crown back in to the normal position in accordance with a time signal.
7. Screw in (if screwdown type) the crown.

Notes:
• Do not set the date between 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM, otherwise
it may not change properly. If it is necessary to set the date
during that time period, first advance the time ahead of 2:00
AM, set the date and then reset the correct time.
• The date changes instantly when the hands move past the 12
o’clock marker at midnight. When the date is set by turning the
hands, however, it may change gradually between 2:00 AM and
6:00 AM. This is not a malfunction.
• When setting the hour hand, check that AM/PM is set correctly.
The watch is designed so that the calendar changes once in 24
hours. Turn the hands past the 12 o’clock marker to determine                                                                                                                                    whether the watch is set for the AM or PM period. If the date
changes the time is set for the AM period. If the date does not
change, the time is set for the PM period.
• When setting the minute hand, advance it 4 to 5 minutes ahead
of the desired time and then turn it back to the exact minute.
• When setting the time, make sure that the second hand is
moving at one-second intervals.
• It is necessary to adjust the date at the end of February and 30-
day months. In this case, pull the crown out to the first click and
turn it counter-clockwise until the desired date appears.

CHRONOGRAPH
The chronograph can measure up to 12 hours, 6 minutes and
12.2 seconds in 1/10 second increments. The measured time is
indicated by small hands that move independently of the hands
for time indication.
